# Pavo Order Limit

Pavo Order Limit lets you decide how much customers can buy: minimum and maximum quantities per product, minimum and maximum order values, and how often a customer can order the same products. This guide walks you through setting up your first limit, every option on every page, and what your customers see on the product page, in the cart and at checkout.

The app is listed as **Pavo Order Limit** in the Shopify App Store. Inside the app the pages are titled **Order Limit**, **Order Limit Rules**, **Order Limit Analytics** and **Order Limit Settings**.

**Audience:** store owners and staff who set purchase limits, and anyone who answers customer questions about them.

**Last reviewed:** October 6, 2026.

**Before you begin:** you need access to the app in your Shopify admin and permission to edit your theme (to turn on the app embed once). The app is free; there's no plan to choose and no limit on the number of rules.

## Understand how Pavo Order Limit works

Three things work together:

* A **rule** is one limit, such as "at most 5 of these snowboards per order" or "orders must be at least $50". You can have as many rules as you need, and turn each one on or off.
* The **app embed** is a small piece of the app that you turn on once in your theme. It shows limits on the product page and in the cart, and stops customers from adding more than allowed.
* **Checkout validation** is run by Shopify at checkout. It stops an order that breaks a rule from being placed, even if a customer skips the cart page. You don't need to set it up; the app does it for you.

What happens when a customer shops:

1. On a product page, the customer sees hints such as **Minimum quantity: 2**, and the quantity box only allows amounts within your limits.
2. If they try to add more than the maximum, the item isn't added and your message appears on the page.
3. In the cart, each line that breaks a rule shows your message, and the checkout button is turned off until the cart is fixed. Customers can always remove items or change quantities toward the limit.
4. At checkout, Shopify shows your message and won't let the order be completed while the cart breaks a rule.

You choose how strict the app is with **Enforcement Mode** in **Settings**:

| Mode                                    | What customers experience                                                                                  |
| --------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Block — Prevent checkout** (default) | Messages appear, the checkout button is turned off in the cart, and checkout can't be completed. |
| **Warn — Show warning, allow checkout** | The same messages appear as warnings, but customers can still check out. Useful for trying out new limits. |

## Find your way around the app

The app menu in your Shopify admin has four pages. **Test a cart** opens from the **Order Limit Rules** page.

| Page | What you do there |
| --------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Home** | Follow the **Setup Guide**, see the last 30 days at a glance (**Blocked Attempts**, **Customers Affected**, **Active / Total Rules**). |
| **Order Limit Rules** | Create, edit, turn on or off and delete rules. Check the **Rules overview** for conflicts. |
| **Test a cart** | Build a sample cart and see what checkout would do with your current rules. Nothing is added to a real cart. |
| **Analytics** | See how often customers were stopped or warned, by rule and by product. |
| **Settings** | Turn the app on or off, choose Block or Warn, decide where messages appear, edit the texts customers see, get email alerts. |

## Set up your first limit

This example limits a product to at most 5 per order. It takes about five minutes.

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Create the rule

1. Open **Order Limit Rules**, then click **Add Rule**.
2. In **Rule Name**, type a name only you will see, for example "Max 5 snowboards".
3. Keep **Rule Type** set to **Product / Variant Quantity Limit**.
4. Set **Apply To** to **Specific Products**, click **Browse products**, and choose the product.
5. Under **Quantity Limits**, type `5` in **Maximum Quantity**.
   {% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Save the rule

1. Click **Save** in the bar at the top of the page.

**Expected result:** a confirmation that the rule was created, and the rule appears on **Order Limit Rules** with an **Active** badge.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Make sure the app is turned on

1. Open **Settings**.
2. Check that **Order Limit App** is on and **Enforcement Mode** is **Block — Prevent checkout**.
3. If you changed anything, click **Save**.
   {% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Turn on the app embed in your theme

1. Open **Home** and find step 3 of the **Setup Guide**, **Add the Order Limit block to your theme**.
2. Click **Open theme editor**. Your theme editor opens on **App embeds**.
3. Make sure **Order Limit App Embed** is turned on.
4. Click **Save** in the theme editor.
5. Back in the app, click the refresh button next to the step to check again.

{% hint style="info" %}
The app embed is what shows limits on your product pages and in the cart. Without it, checkout still enforces your rules, but customers only find out at checkout.
{% endhint %}
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Check it

1. On the **Order Limit Rules** page, click **Test a cart**, choose the product, set the quantity to 6, and click **Run test**.
2. Open the product in your online store and try to add 6.

**Expected result:** the test shows **Checkout would be blocked**, and on your store the product page shows **Maximum quantity: 5**, the quantity box stops at 5, and adding a 6th item shows your limit message.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## Choose the right rule type

Pick the **Rule Type** that matches what you want to limit.

| You want to…                                                                           | Rule Type                                  | Limits you set                                                |
| -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Sell at least or at most a number of units of a product, or only in packs (6, 12, 18…) | **Product / Variant Quantity Limit** | **Minimum Quantity**, **Maximum Quantity**, **Quantity Step** |
| Require a minimum order value, or cap the order value | **Cart Value Limit (Min/Max order value)** | **Minimum Order Value**, **Maximum Order Value** |
| Stop customers ordering the same products too often | **Purchase Frequency Limit** | **Maximum orders per period**, **Period (days)** |

Every rule also has:

* **Rule Name**: for you only; customers never see it.
* **Active**: turn a rule off without deleting it.
* **Priority (higher = evaluated first)**: a number from 0 to 100. See [Use several rules together](#use-several-rules-together).

{% hint style="info" %}
If you created rules in an earlier version of the app, you may see **Collection Quantity Limit (legacy)** or **Variant Quantity Limit (legacy)** when editing them. They keep working as before. For new rules, use **Product / Variant Quantity Limit** and choose collections or variants under **Apply To**.
{% endhint %}

## Choose which products a rule covers

**Apply To** decides which products a quantity rule checks.

| Apply To | Covers | How to choose |
| ------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **All Products** | Every product in your store | Nothing to select |
| **Specific Products** | The products you pick, or only some variants of a product | **Browse products**, then pick whole products or open a product and pick variants |
| **Specific Collections** | Every product in the collections you pick | **Browse collections** |
| **Product Conditions (vendor, type, tag, price)** | Every product that matches your conditions, including products you add later | Fill in the conditions (below) |

Your choices appear under **Selected items:**. To remove one, use its action in the list.

### Use product conditions

Product conditions are handy when you want a rule to follow your catalog automatically, for example "all Nike shoes" or "everything tagged clearance under $20".

| Field                                              | How it matches                                                                                             |
| -------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Vendor (comma separated, matches ANY)** | The product's vendor is one of the names you list |
| **Product Type (comma separated, matches ANY)** | The product's type is one of the types you list |
| **Tags (comma separated)** with **Tag match mode** | **Match ANY tag**: the product has at least one of the tags. **Match ALL tags**: the product has every tag |
| **Min Price per unit** / **Max Price per unit** | The price of one unit of the variant, in your store currency |

A product must match **all** the fields you fill in. Leave a field empty to skip it.

{% hint style="info" %}
Because the app looks up each product's vendor, type, tags and price, the limits for these rules appear on the product page a moment after the page loads. They're also checked in the cart and at checkout.
{% endhint %}

**Apply To** works slightly differently for the other rule types:

* **Cart Value Limit** rules always look at the whole cart, so only **All Products** is offered.
* **Purchase Frequency Limit** rules can use **All Products** or **Specific Products**.

## Set quantity limits

Quantity limits apply to each product line in the cart: if a customer adds 3 of one product and 4 of another, each line is checked separately.

| Setting              | What it does                                                         | Default              |
| -------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------- |
| **Minimum Quantity** | The customer must buy at least this many | Empty (no minimum) |
| **Maximum Quantity** | The customer can buy at most this many | Empty (no maximum) |
| **Quantity Step** | The quantity must be a multiple of this number. "6" means 6, 12, 18… | Empty (any quantity) |

What customers see:

* **Product page:** hints such as **Minimum quantity: 2** and **Maximum quantity: 5** under the quantity box (if **Show quantity info** is on). The quantity box starts at the minimum and won't go above the maximum, taking into account what's already in the cart. While the customer types a quantity outside your limits, your message appears on the page. Adding more than the maximum, or fewer than the minimum, is refused with your message.
* **Cart and cart drawer:** a message under each line that breaks the rule. In Block mode the checkout button is turned off until every line is fixed. The minus button stops at the minimum, but customers can always remove the item.
* **Checkout:** the order can't be completed while a line breaks the rule (Block mode).

## Set minimum and maximum order value

Use a **Cart Value Limit (Min/Max order value)** rule to require a minimum order amount or cap it.

| Setting                 | What it does                                                           |
| ----------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Minimum Order Value** | The cart subtotal must be at least this amount, in your store currency |
| **Maximum Order Value** | The cart subtotal can't exceed this amount |

The whole cart is checked, whatever products it contains.

What customers see:

* **Cart:** a message above the checkout button, such as **Minimum order value is $50.00.** If **Show progress bar for cart value rules** is on, a bar shows how much more they need to add, for example **Add $12.00 more to reach the minimum order**, then **Minimum order reached**.
* **Checkout:** the same message, with the order blocked until the subtotal is within your limits.

{% hint style="info" %}
If you sell in several currencies (Shopify Markets), the cart page shows order value messages only to customers shopping in your store currency. At checkout the limit is always applied, converted to the customer's currency.
{% endhint %}

## Limit how often customers can order

A **Purchase Frequency Limit** rule stops a customer from placing too many orders that contain the same products in a period, for example one order of a limited-edition product every 30 days.

| Setting                       | What it does                                                                                                                                             |
| ----------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Maximum orders per period** | How many orders containing the rule's products a customer can place in the period. Quantities inside an order don't matter; add a quantity rule for that |
| **Period (days)** | The length of the period, from 1 to 365 days, counted back from today |

How it works:

* It applies to **logged-in customers only**. Past orders are matched to the customer's account and email, so guest checkouts can't be counted.
* Each new order counts toward the limit. A cancelled order frees up the allowance again.
* Customers who have reached the limit see your message in the cart and can't complete checkout.

## Apply a rule to some customers only

Under **Customer Eligibility**, **Apply This Rule To** decides who the rule applies to.

| Option | The rule applies to |
| ------------------------------------ | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **All customers** (default)          | Everyone                                                                                     |
| **Logged-in customers only** | Customers signed in to their customer account |
| **Guest customers only** | Customers who aren't signed in |
| **Customers with any of these tags** | Signed-in customers who have at least one of the tags in **Customer Tags (comma separated)** |

{% hint style="info" %}
A customer counts as logged in only when they're actually signed in to their account. Typing an email address that belongs to an existing customer at checkout doesn't make a guest "logged in".
{% endhint %}

Customer tags are saved with the spelling your store already uses: if you type `vip` and your customers are tagged `VIP`, the rule is saved with `VIP` and matches them.

## Schedule a rule

Use a schedule for limits that should only run for a while, such as a flash sale.

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Set the schedule

In the rule, under **Schedule (Optional)**, turn on **Set a schedule for this rule**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Enter the dates and times

Set **Start Date** and **Start Time**, **End Date** and **End Time**. Leave the start or the end empty if you only need one.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Use your store's time zone

Enter times in 24-hour format, for example 09:00 or 23:59, in your store's time zone. The time zone is shown under the time fields.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Save

Click **Save**.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

The end must be after the start. A rule starts and stops applying within about five minutes of the times you set. Rules that haven't started yet are counted as **scheduled** in the **Rules overview**, and rules whose end has passed as **ended**.

## Customize the messages customers see

Every message customers see can be changed and translated, in two places:

* **In a rule**, under **Custom Error Messages**: wording for that rule only.
* **In Settings**, under **Customer messages**: shop-wide wording for every rule that has no message of its own, plus the product page hints and the progress bar.

### Which text is shown

For each message, the app uses the first of these that exists:

1. The rule's translation for the customer's language.
2. The rule's own message.
3. The **Customer messages** translation for the customer's language.
4. The **Customer messages** text.
5. The built-in text (shown in grey in the empty fields).

### Placeholders

Words in braces are replaced with the rule's numbers:

| Placeholder | Replaced with                                                                  |
| ----------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| `{min}` | The minimum quantity, or the minimum order value as an amount |
| `{max}` | The maximum quantity, the maximum order value, or the maximum number of orders |
| `{step}`    | The quantity multiple                                                          |
| `{days}`    | The period of a frequency rule                                                 |

Amounts are formatted like the prices in your store, so write "Orders start at {min}", not "Orders start at ${min}".

### Change a rule's messages

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Open the rule

Open the rule.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Fill in the custom messages

Under **Custom Error Messages**, fill in **Message for Minimum Quantity**, **Message for Maximum Quantity**, **Message for Step/Multiple** or **Message for Frequency Limit**. For order value rules, the minimum and maximum messages are used for the order value.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Save

Click **Save**.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

### Change the shop-wide texts

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Open customer messages

Open **Settings** and scroll to **Customer messages**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Change limit messages

Under **Limit messages**, change the texts for product limits, collection totals, order value and order frequency.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Change hints and progress bar texts

Under **Product page hints and cart progress bar**, change the hints and progress bar texts.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Save

Click **Save**.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

### Translate messages

Customers browsing your store in another language see the translation for that language. Use language codes such as `fr`, `de` or `pt-BR`. A translation for `fr` is also used for French variants such as `fr-CA`.

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Add languages

Under **Translations** (in a rule or in **Customer messages**), type the codes in **Language codes** and click **Add**. In **Settings**, you can also click **Add store languages (…)** to add every language your store publishes.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Fill in translations

Fill in the fields for each language. Empty fields fall back to the text above.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Save

Click **Save**.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

Up to 20 languages can be added to a rule, and 20 to **Customer messages**.

### Write and translate with AI

When AI features are available in your app, you can:

* Click **Write messages with AI** in a rule to draft messages in the **Message language** you choose.
* Click **Translate with AI** to translate the messages into the languages you added.

Review AI-written texts before you save; nothing is saved until you click **Save**. In **Customer messages**, a translation that loses a placeholder such as `{min}` is left out.

{% hint style="info" %}
All your active rules and settings, messages and translations included, must fit in the space Shopify gives checkout validation. If they don't, saving is refused with a message such as "Active rules and settings are too large for checkout validation". Shorten messages or remove translations you don't need.
{% endhint %}

## Use several rules together

When more than one rule covers the same product or cart, **all of them apply** and the strictest limit wins. For example, a "max 10" rule for all products and a "max 5" rule for one product let customers buy at most 5 of that product.

**Priority (higher = evaluated first)** decides the order in which rules are checked. At checkout, when one product line breaks several rules, the message of the rule with the highest priority is shown.

The **Rules overview** on **Order Limit Rules** helps you spot problems:

* Badges count your rules: **active**, **scheduled**, **inactive**, **ended**, and **conflicts** or **warnings**. **No conflicts found** means the checks found nothing.
* Each issue explains what's wrong, for example two rules that can never both be met, and links to **Edit** the rules involved.
* **How your rules apply** lists your rules in the order they're checked.
* **AI summary** (when available) describes your rules in plain words. Click **Regenerate** to refresh it after changes, up to 10 times an hour.

## Test a cart before going live

**Test a cart** shows what checkout would do with your current rules. Nothing is added to a real cart, and no customer sees anything.

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Open Test a cart

On **Order Limit Rules**, click **Test a cart**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Add products

Click **Choose products** and set a quantity for each.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Set the customer

Under **Customer**, choose **Guest (not logged in)** or **Logged-in customer**. For a logged-in customer, add **Customer tags (comma separated)** if your rules use tags.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Set frequency history

If you have frequency rules, set **Orders this customer already placed in the rule's period**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Run the test

Click **Run test**.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

**Expected result:** one of **Checkout would be allowed**, **Checkout would be blocked**, **Customers would see warnings but could still check out (Warn mode)** or **Order limits are turned off in Settings, so nothing is enforced**, followed by **Messages shown at checkout:** and how each rule applied.

The test uses each product's current vendor, type, tags, price and collections. Prices are in your store currency; discounts aren't applied.

## Track blocked purchases

**Analytics** shows how your limits affect customers. Choose **7 days**, **30 days** or **90 days** at the top.

| Section                   | What it shows                                                          |

| **Total Blocked** | How many times a customer was stopped (Block mode) |
| **Warnings Shown** | How many times a customer saw a warning but could continue (Warn mode) |
| **Unique Customers** | How many different customers were affected |
| **Insights** | Things worth a look, with a link to **Edit rule** |
| **Daily Activity** | Blocks and warnings per day |
| **Top Triggered Rules** | The rules customers run into most |
| **Top Affected Products** | The products involved most often |

Counts come from the product page and the cart. Each customer is counted once per rule, product and page within 30 minutes, so repeated clicks don't inflate the numbers. Blocks at checkout aren't reported by Shopify, so they don't appear here.

| Nothing shows on my product pages or cart | 1. **Home** → **Setup Guide**: step 3 must say **Done**. If not, **Open theme editor**, turn on **Order Limit App Embed** and click **Save**. 2. **Settings**: **Order Limit App** is on. 3. The rule is **Active** and, if scheduled, has started. |
| Checkout isn't blocked | 1. **Enforcement Mode** is **Block — Prevent checkout**. 2. Run **Test a cart** with the same products and customer type. 3. Look for a red banner on **Order Limit Rules** saying **Checkout validation is not enforcing your rules** and follow it. 4. In your Shopify admin, open **Settings > Checkout** and, under checkout rules, check that the app's rule is turned on. |
| A rule for logged-in customers also stops guests | Check **Apply This Rule To** on every rule that covers the product; another rule may apply to **All customers**. Guests only count as logged in after signing in to their account. |
| A guest isn't stopped by a frequency limit | Frequency limits apply to logged-in customers only. |
| The order value message doesn't show in the cart | The customer may be shopping in another currency; the limit is still applied at checkout. Also check that the rule's customer setting matches the customer. |
| Product condition limits appear late on the product page | The app looks up product details after the page loads; a short delay is normal. |
| Hints such as "Minimum quantity" don't show | **Settings** → **Show quantity info** is on, and the product is covered by an active rule for this customer. |
| The progress bar doesn't show | **Show progress bar for cart value rules** is on, and you have an active **Cart Value Limit** with a **Minimum Order Value**. |
| Messages appear in the wrong place on the product page | Try another **Error Message Position**. Some themes lack the element for a position; the message then appears above the Add to cart button. |

## Frequently asked questions

<details>

<summary>Is the app free?</summary>

Yes. All features are available and there's no limit on the number of rules.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Do I have to add anything to my theme?</summary>

Only turn on **Order Limit App Embed** once in the theme editor. Use **Open theme editor** on **Home**. The app doesn't change your theme code.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Can customers get around the limits?</summary>

The product page and cart checks help customers fix their cart early. The final check runs at checkout, through Shopify, so an order that breaks a Block-mode rule can't be completed.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Can I try limits without blocking customers?</summary>

Yes. Set **Enforcement Mode** to **Warn — Show warning, allow checkout**. Customers see the messages but can still check out, and **Analytics** counts the warnings.

</details>

<details>

<summary>What happens when a product is covered by several rules?</summary>

All of them apply and the strictest limit wins. See [Use several rules together](#use-several-rules-together).

</details>

<details>

<summary>Does a frequency limit count units or orders?</summary>

Orders. A customer with **Maximum orders per period** set to 2 can place two orders containing the products, whatever the quantities.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Can I limit a whole collection?</summary>

Yes. Use **Product / Variant Quantity Limit** with **Apply To** set to **Specific Collections**. The limit applies to each product in the collections.

</details>

<details>

<summary>What happens to my rules if I uninstall the app?</summary>

The app stops checking carts and checkout right away. Your rules and settings are kept for a short time in case you reinstall; Shopify then asks the app to delete your store's data, and it's deleted.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Does the AI see my customers' data?</summary>

No. AI features use your rule settings and the texts you write, not customer or order information.

</details>

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://pavoapps.gitbook.io/pavoapps-docs/pavo-order-limit.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
